On a spring afternoon in North Platte, Nebraska, the life of 25-year-old Brett Allen Torres was brought to a sudden and violent end. It was May 22, 2020, when authorities were called to an alley in the 100 block of North Chestnut Street. There, they discovered the young man unresponsive inside his vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Great Plains Health but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The male victim had been shot numerous times with a. 45 caliber handgun.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect, Keith L. Allen, who was 43 years old at the time. In a surprising turn, it was Allen himself who had called 911, reporting that he had shot Torres. He claimed the act was one of self-defense. However, investigators at the scene found no weapon in Torres's possession or inside his vehicle. Allen was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm to commit a felony. He was held without bond in the Lincoln County Detention Center.
The case proceeded to a jury trial in October 2021, where the story behind the fatal encounter unfolded. The jury heard testimony about a volatile, on-again, off-again relationship between Torres and a woman named Amanda Beall. On the day of the shooting, Beall was reportedly going back and forth between Torres and Allen. The conflict culminated in the alley, where Torres pulled his vehicle up next to the one occupied by Beall and Allen. An exchange occurred, and Allen fired his handgun at Torres multiple times. Despite Allen's assertion that he acted in self-defense, the jury deliberated for only a few hours before finding him guilty of first-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony. In early 2022, Keith Allen was sentenced to a mandatory life sentence in prison for the murder, with an additional 20 to 30 years for the weapons charge.
