In Lincoln, Nebraska, on the evening of Wednesday, November 11, 2020, a young life was tragically cut short. Ivan Messersmith, a 21-year-old White male, died from an accidental gunshot wound inside his apartment. His girlfriend discovered him unconscious and not breathing, having sustained a gunshot wound to his head.
An investigation into the circumstances of the shooting revealed that Messersmith had been filming a video.
While doing so, he was handling a handgun and unintentionally shot himself. Police have ruled the incident as an accidental shooting, and as a result, there have been no arrests, and no suspects have been named in connection with his death.
Messersmith, originally from Grand Island, was a freshman at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he was studying civil engineering. He was also a sergeant in the Nebraska National Guard. His passing was a sudden and devastating event for his family and friends.
