On January 28, 2005, 30-year-old Allison R. Small was fatally shot at her business in Rockland, Maine. The perpetrator, 31-year-old Douglas A. Dyer, was an employee with whom she had been involved in a long-term extramarital affair. On the day of the incident, Small and her husband, Brandon, arrived at their Vinalhaven Transportation office, where she entered alone to meet Dyer.
