In the coastal city of Rockland, Maine, the life of 30-year-old Caucasian female Allison R. Small was tragically cut short on January 28, 2005. A Vinalhaven woman, she was fatally shot at Bunker's, a food distribution company that she and her husband, Brandon Small, operated. The incident that unfolded in the parking lot of the New County Road business stemmed from a planned meeting to discuss a personal matter involving Allison, her husband, and a truck driver for the company, Douglas Dyer.
Authorities reported that an affair between Allison Small and the 31-year-old Dyer was the catalyst for the fatal encounter. The three had arranged to meet at the business to address the situation. Brandon Small had dropped his wife off for the meeting with Dyer. When he returned around 12:45 p.m., he witnessed a horrifying scene: his wife running from the building after being shot. Allison Small succumbed to her wounds in the parking lot. In the ensuing chaos, another shot was fired at Brandon Small, but he was not injured.
Following the shooting, Douglas Dyer fled the scene in his pickup truck, prompting a search by state, county, and local police, which included the use of a state police airplane. Investigators believed he was armed with a hunting rifle. However, the manhunt came to a peaceful end approximately four hours later when Dyer drove himself to the Waldoboro Police Department and surrendered to authorities at 4:30 p.m.
