On a tragic spring evening in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, the life of 20-year-old Ryan A. Mayo, a White/Caucasian male, was cut short. On May 1, 2011, Ryan died from a single gunshot wound to the head outside his residence on French Road. The fatal incident was the culmination of a heated dispute with his older brother, Steven T. Mayo.
The conflict began when Steven, 22 at the time, returned home to find his driveway damaged by an all-terrain vehicle, an act he attributed to his younger
brother. This led to a confrontation between the two siblings who lived in adjacent homes. The argument escalated, with Steven allegedly admitting to shooting out the tires of Ryan's ATV. According to Steven's account to the police, the situation intensified when Ryan emerged from his house with a shotgun.
The altercation turned deadly when Steven fired a 70-year-old Russian rifle, striking Ryan. Evidence at the scene indicated that the bullet penetrated Ryan's front door before hitting him. Neighbors reported hearing several shots in quick succession, followed by screaming. Ryan's body was discovered near the steps of his home.
In the aftermath, Steven Mayo was questioned by authorities and subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of his brother. Initially pleading not guilty, Steven later pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in June 2012. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison, with all but nine years suspended.
