On February 16, 2012, Jerry Perdomo, a 31-year-old firefighter from Orange City, Florida, traveled to Jackson, Maine, to collect a $3,000 drug debt from Daniel Porter, a 24-year-old resident of Jackson. The two men had previously exchanged death threats, with Perdomo allegedly threatening to cut off Porter's hands, and Porter threatening to shoot Perdomo and put him through a wood chipper.
