On July 21, 2012, in Waldoboro, Maine, 34-year-old Norman Benner Jr. was fatally shot by his girlfriend, 25-year-old Arline Lawless, at their shared residence on Friendship Road. According to an affidavit by Maine State Police Detective Abbe Chabot, Lawless confessed to shooting Benner in his sleep after he expressed intentions to end their relationship. Following the shooting, Lawless inflicted a self-inflicted gunshot wound to her face.
