In the early morning hours of June 1, 2016, a dispute over a modest drug debt tragically escalated, leading to the death of 24-year-old Michael Reis, a White male from New Sharon, Maine. The fatal encounter unfolded outside a mobile home on Weld Road in the small town of Wilton. Reis, who did not reside at the home, had accompanied a group of individuals to the residence in connection with a $200 marijuana debt.
Inside the home was Timothy Danforth, who was visiting his father.
An altercation ensued between the group that arrived with Reis and the occupants of the home. During the confrontation, Danforth, then 25, armed himself with a shotgun. He fired the weapon, striking Reis. The single gunshot wound proved to be fatal, and Reis was pronounced dead at the scene. Maine State Police were called to investigate the shooting, and from the outset, the identity of the shooter was not in question, with authorities stating that he was cooperating with the investigation.
Timothy Danforth was subsequently arrested and charged with murder in connection with Michael Reis's death. His trial commenced in September 2017, where his defense attorneys argued that his actions were justified. They contended that Danforth acted in self-defense, as well as in defense of his father and their property, stating that the group accompanying Reis was armed with items such as a baseball bat and brass knuckles. After a six-day trial and lengthy deliberations, the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict, resulting in the judge declaring a mistrial in October 2017.
Following the hung jury, the prospect of a second trial loomed. However, in April 2018, Timothy Danforth chose to plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. This plea brought a legal conclusion to the case that began with a dispute over a small sum of money and ended with the untimely death of a young man. The court proceedings revealed a complex situation where claims of self-defense intersected with the realities of a fatal confrontation fueled by a drug-related disagreement.
