Lori Hayden, a 52-year-old Caucasian female, found her life tragically cut short on July 5, 2017, in the quiet town of Madison, Maine. On that day, a violent chain of events unfolded, stemming from what authorities would later describe as an extreme case of domestic violence. Lori was fatally shot inside her home at 316 Russell Road by her partner, 51-year-old Carroll Tuttle Jr.
The violence did not end with her death; Tuttle also turned his weapon on their 25-year-old son, Dustin Tuttle, killing him as well.
The rampage extended beyond their immediate family. After killing Lori and Dustin, Tuttle went to a neighbor's residence at 299 Russell Road and shot and killed 57-year-old Michael Spaulding. Another individual, 57-year-old Harvey Austin of Skowhegan, was also shot and wounded outside the Tuttle home but survived the attack. The motive for this horrific outburst was not definitively established, though some reports indicated that Tuttle may have held baseless suspicions of an affair between his wife and their neighbor. It was suggested that Spaulding was assisting Lori in leaving her husband at the time of the shooting.
The violent episode concluded when deputies from the Somerset County Sheriff's Office confronted Carroll Tuttle Jr. near the scene of the crimes. During this confrontation, Tuttle was shot and killed by the officers. As the perpetrator was deceased, there were no subsequent arrests or trials of a suspect in connection with the deaths of Lori Hayden, Dustin Tuttle, and Michael Spaulding. The Maine Attorney General's Office conducted an investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure in such cases. Autopsies later confirmed that Lori Hayden and the other deceased victims died from gunshot wounds. The deaths of Lori and her son were officially classified as domestic violence homicides.
