In the fall of 2019, the life of 29-year-old Melissa Marie Sousa, a White female from Waterville, Maine, was tragically cut short. On the morning of October 22, Sousa was last seen putting her twin eight-year-old daughters on the school bus. When she failed to show up for her shift at Dunkin' Donuts and friends and family were unable to reach her, they grew concerned and reported her missing that evening.
This was completely out of character for the devoted mother who, according to friends, cherished her children above all else.
The investigation into her disappearance quickly focused on her longtime boyfriend and the father of her children, 28-year-old Nicholas Lovejoy. Friends and colleagues of Sousa's revealed a troubled relationship, stating that Lovejoy had a history of threatening to kill her. Sousa had reportedly been taking steps to leave Lovejoy and secure a new apartment for herself and her daughters. In the early hours of October 23, before Sousa's body was discovered, police arrested Lovejoy on charges of having a loaded rifle in his vehicle and endangering the welfare of a child, as he had left their twin daughters home alone.
The search for Melissa Sousa came to a grim conclusion on the afternoon of October 23, when investigators discovered her body hidden in the basement of the Gold Street apartment building where she lived with Lovejoy. The state Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed her identity and determined that her death was a homicide. An autopsy revealed that she had been shot.
Following the discovery, Nicholas Lovejoy was charged with murder. Prosecutors asserted that he became enraged after learning of Sousa's plans to leave him. Lovejoy initially claimed he shot Sousa in self-defense after she allegedly pushed him down a staircase and attempted to shoot him. However, in May 2022, he pleaded guilty to the charge of murder. In February 2023, a judge sentenced Lovejoy to 42 years in prison for the murder of Melissa Sousa. Her friends and family continue to mourn the loss of a loving mother, remembered for her dedication to her daughters.
