In the winter of 1989, a tragic event unfolded in Billings, Montana, forever marking Valentine's Day with a somber memory. Alexander Finlayson Mavity, a 28-year-old White male and a dedicated detective with the Billings Police Department, lost his life in the line of duty. He had served on the force for eight years, earning the respect of his colleagues and the community he swore to protect.
The events leading to his death began with the arrest of a man named Ronnie Duworth on a parole
violation, stemming from a domestic disturbance call. As Detective Mavity was escorting Duworth into the rear of the police station, the prisoner made a desperate bid for freedom and fled. A chase ensued, leading them into a nearby alley.
In that narrow alley, a fierce struggle erupted between Detective Mavity and the fleeing suspect. During the chaotic confrontation, Duworth managed to gain control of Mavity's service weapon. Shots were fired, and Detective Mavity was fatally wounded with his own handgun. In the continuing struggle, Duworth was also shot and killed.
The sudden and violent death of Detective Alex Mavity sent shockwaves through the Billings community. He was remembered not just as a hard-working officer, but as a son, a brother, a husband, and a father to a young daughter. In his memory, the Mavity Law Enforcement Memorial was dedicated in May 1992 and stands in front of the Billings Police Department, a lasting tribute to a hero who made the ultimate sacrifice.
