Burgess was a father and a grandfather, and he was in a partnership with Carlita Boyer, helping to raise her three daughters. He was remembered by his family and friends for his caring and loving nature, his "big but gentle bear hugs," and his willingness to help others. He had a deep love for animals, having rescued several throughout his life. His passing was deeply mourned by his mother, siblings, daughter, granddaughters, and his partner.
