On January 28, 2022, officers from the Sidney Police Department conducted a welfare check at an apartment on the 900 block of 3rd Street NW in Sidney, Montana, after 50-year-old Christopher Arthur Wetzstein failed to appear at work. Inside, they discovered Wetzstein deceased in his bed, having suffered a gunshot wound to the head. An autopsy confirmed the death as a homicide.
