In the small town of Gooding, Idaho, the life of 34-year-old Steven Lawrence, a Caucasian male, was cut short on December 28, 2016. What began as a familial confrontation escalated into a fatal shooting that would see his own father-in-law facing a prison sentence. The man responsible for Lawrence's death was his 62-year-old father-in-law, Jimmie O'Neal Sr.
The tragic events unfolded when O'Neal went to confront his son-in-law about the alleged abuse of his daughter.
According to O'Neal's account to the police, Lawrence barricaded himself inside a bedroom. As O'Neal forced his way into the room, he claimed his handgun "went off." Paramedics rushed Lawrence to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead from a hollow-point bullet that struck his left arm and lodged in his right lung.
Following the shooting, Jimmie O'Neal Sr. was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. He was held at the Gooding County Jail on a $250,000 bond. In a turn of events, O'Neal later accepted a plea agreement. He entered an Alford plea to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, a plea in which he maintained his innocence but acknowledged that prosecutors had enough evidence for a conviction.
During the sentencing, the prosecution argued that the shooting was not accidental but the result of O'Neal's rage during the confrontation. O'Neal's defense attorney requested probation, citing his client's clean prior record and health issues. However, the judge rejected both arguments and sentenced Jimmie O'Neal Sr. to 12 years in prison, with the possibility of parole after six years. The judge stated that O'Neal had brought the gun to the argument knowing that Lawrence also carried one and was "prepared to engage in a shootout."
