Deputy Sheriff Dennis Ray Armes, aged 28, was shot and killed on March 15, 1983, while performing his duties in Kingston, Tennessee. Armes, who served with the Roane County Sheriff's Office, was fatally wounded after stopping a vehicle on Highway 58, approximately six miles south of Kingston. The suspect fired three shots at Armes, striking him once in the chest. Despite returning fire, Armes' gun jammed, and he was not wearing a bulletproof vest at the time.
