In a quiet Nampa, Idaho neighborhood on the night of April 28, 2017, the life of 34-year-old Andrew Shepard, a White male, was brought to a tragic and violent end. He was at the home of his friend, Amanda Storms, when her estranged husband, Phillip Cabrera, arrived in a jealous rage. Believing Shepard was romantically involved with his wife, Cabrera began a relentless attempt to get inside the home, banging on windows and doors.
Inside, a fearful Storms called 911, while she and Shepard,
along with her two young children, sought refuge in a bathroom, barricading the door. Their efforts to remain safe were futile. Cabrera, fueled by a combination of alcohol and cocaine, kicked down the front door and then splintered the bathroom door to force his way in. He was armed with a handgun and a rifle. The scene that unfolded was one of terror and chaos. While holding Storms' infant daughter, Shepard was shot by Cabrera. After Shepard fell to the floor, Cabrera fired a second, fatal shot to his head.
When the first police officer arrived at the scene of the disturbance, he was met by Cabrera, who smiled and then opened fire in the officer's direction before retreating back towards the house. A tense standoff ensued, with Cabrera eventually surrendering to the authorities. Andrew Shepard was found deceased inside the home.
Phillip Cabrera was arrested and faced multiple charges, including first-degree murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. In February 2018, to avoid a potential death penalty, Cabrera pleaded guilty to the charges. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison and will be eligible for parole after 35 years. The tragic event was described by the presiding judge as one of the saddest cases he had seen in his 24 years on the bench. Shepard was remembered by his family as a loving and protective man.
