On April 11, 2021, 43-year-old Matthew Banning was fatally shot in Midvale, Idaho. The incident occurred during a confrontation between Banning and 41-year-old Terry Ash, who had been a former friend.

Ash shot Banning once in the chest with a .44 caliber revolver. Although Banning was also armed with a pistol, he did not fire it. The shooting took place near a property line between two homes located off School Road in Midvale.
