David Knauer, a 65-year-old recent retiree, was found dead near Challis, Idaho, on November 14, 2022. Custer County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a possible suicide, but the circumstances surrounding Knauer's death quickly raised suspicions. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the head, but the position of his body and the gun suggested foul play.
