In the quiet, rural landscape near Challis, Idaho, the life of 65-year-old David Knauer came to an unexpected and violent end on November 14, 2022. A recent retiree, the man had moved to the scenic area from Fairfield, California, just two weeks prior, hoping to enjoy a peaceful retirement. That peace was shattered when the Custer County Sheriff's deputies received a 911 call reporting a possible suicide.
However, upon their arrival, the scene immediately raised suspicions among the investigators.
The initial report of suicide quickly gave way to a homicide investigation. Knauer had sustained a gunshot wound to the head, but the positioning of his body and the firearm suggested foul play rather than a self-inflicted act.
