In the quiet town of Derry, New Hampshire, a shocking crime unfolded on the evening of May 1, 1990, forever altering the lives of those involved. Gregory Smart, a 24-year-old Caucasian male, returned to his condominium after a day's work as an insurance agent. Unbeknownst to him, his arrival was anticipated. Later that night, his wife, Pamela Smart, then 22, would report coming home to a horrifying scene: her husband lay dead on the floor, the victim of a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
The residence had been ransacked, suggesting a burglary gone terribly wrong, but investigators would soon unravel a far more sinister plot.
The initial appearance of a random home invasion quickly dissipated as police delved deeper into the couple's life. The investigation uncovered a secret affair between Pamela Smart, a media coordinator at a local high school, and a 15-year-old student, William "Billy" Flynn. It was this illicit relationship that would prove to be the motive for Gregory's murder. Prosecutors asserted that Pamela, fearing the financial and social repercussions of a divorce, manipulated her young lover into killing her husband. She allegedly threatened to end their relationship if he did not carry out the act.
The conspiracy to murder Gregory Smart was not a solo endeavor. Flynn enlisted the help of three of his friends to execute the plan. On that fateful May evening, Flynn and Patrick "Pete" Randall entered the Smarts' condominium and lay in wait for Gregory. When he arrived, they confronted him, with Randall holding him at knifepoint before Flynn fatally shot him in the head. Two other teenagers, Vance "J.R." Lattime Jr. and Raymond Fowler, played supporting roles in the crime, with Lattime providing the murder weapon and Fowler acting as the getaway driver. The scene was then staged to look like a burglary to mislead investigators.
The carefully constructed facade began to crumble as the investigation intensified. A crucial break in the case came when a friend of the teenagers went to the police with information. This led to the recovery of the murder weapon, a. 38 caliber pistol. Faced with mounting evidence, the teenage accomplices began to cooperate with the authorities. Their testimony painted a damning picture of Pamela Smart as the mastermind behind her husband's murder. On August 1, 1990, Pamela Smart was arrested and charged with being an accomplice to first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and witness tampering. William Flynn, Patrick Randall, Vance Lattime Jr., and Raymond Fowler were also taken into custody for their roles in the killing.
