Djeswende Reid, a 66-year-old Black woman, and her husband, Stephen Reid, 67, were residents of the Alton Woods apartment complex in Concord, New Hampshire. On the afternoon of Monday, April 18, 2022, the couple left their home for a walk, a frequent activity for the avid outdoorspeople. Their path that day led them to the Broken Ground Trails system, not far from their residence.
After they did not return and Stephen missed a planned event, family members grew concerned and reported them missing.
A search effort was launched, and on the evening of April 21, 2022, their bodies were discovered in a wooded area near the Marsh Loop Trail. Autopsies later confirmed that both Djeswende and Stephen Reid had died from multiple gunshot wounds, and their deaths were ruled homicides. Investigators determined that the couple was killed on the same day they went for their walk, April 18th. After being shot, their bodies were dragged from the trail and covered with leaves, branches, and other debris.
The investigation into their deaths led police to a transient man named Logan Clegg, who was living in a tent in the woods near the trail system. A woman who had been hiking on the same trail reported hearing gunshots and seeing a man in the area. After the Reids' bodies were found, Clegg vanished. He burned his tent, destroyed information on a computer, and purchased a bus ticket out of Concord.
Months later, in October 2022, authorities located and arrested 26-year-old Logan Clegg in South Burlington, Vermont. At the time of his arrest, he was in possession of a one-way plane ticket to Germany, a fake passport, and a handgun. Clegg was charged with two counts of second-degree murder for knowingly causing their deaths by shooting them multiple times. In October 2023, a jury found Clegg guilty on all charges, including murder, falsifying physical evidence, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was subsequently sentenced to two consecutive terms of 50 years to life in prison.
