On April 29, 1900, Deputy Sheriff George W. Hoffman, aged 46, succumbed to injuries sustained during an attempted arrest of two escaped inmates in Woodstock, Vermont. The escapees, a father and son aged 53 and 29 respectively, had fled the county jail.
