On March 1, 2023, the life of 37-year-old Melissa Joyce Bergeron, a White female, was tragically cut short in her Colchester, Vermont home. What began as an ordinary day ended in an act of domestic violence that left a community in mourning and a young child without his parents. That evening, a neighbor's 911 call reporting a fight and a loud bang brought police to the couple's condominium on Holy Cross Road.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a devastating scene.
Melissa and her husband of 12 years, Michael Bergeron, were both found deceased from gunshot wounds. The investigation quickly determined that the incident was a murder-suicide. Authorities concluded that Michael Bergeron shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. The senseless act left their beloved 10-year-old son, Nicholas, an orphan. Miraculously, the child was present in the home at the time of the shooting but was physically unharmed. He was found to have run out of the residence after the incident and was placed in the care of relatives.
