On a late summer day in Essex, Vermont, the life of Mary Alicia Shanks, a 56-year-old White/Caucasian female, was brought to a tragic and abrupt end. On August 24, 2006, while preparing her second-grade classroom at Essex Elementary School for the upcoming school year, a gunman's rampage shattered the peace of the community. Teachers and staff were present for an in-service day, looking forward to welcoming students back, when the unthinkable occurred.
The perpetrator, Christopher
Williams, arrived at the school with violent intent. His anger stemmed from a recent breakup with his girlfriend, a teacher at the school. Prior to his arrival at the elementary school, Williams had already begun his deadly spree by killing his ex-girlfriend's mother, Linda Lambesis, at her home. He then proceeded to the school, searching for his former girlfriend. It was there he encountered Mary Alicia Shanks.
In a senseless act of violence, Williams fired his weapon through her classroom door, fatally wounding the beloved teacher. He also shot and injured another teacher, Mary Snedeker, before his rampage was over. The attack sent shockwaves through the quiet Vermont town, leaving a community to mourn the loss of a dedicated educator known for her energetic spirit and love for her students. In the aftermath, Christopher Williams was apprehended by law enforcement. He was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder for the deaths of Mary Alicia Shanks and Linda Lambesis and was sentenced to serve life in prison without the possibility of parole.
