On a late summer day in Essex, Vermont, the life of Mary Alicia Shanks, a 56-year-old White/Caucasian female, was brought to a tragic and abrupt end. On August 24, 2006, while preparing her second-grade classroom at Essex Elementary School for the upcoming school year, a gunman's rampage shattered the peace of the community. Teachers and staff were present for an in-service day, looking forward to welcoming students back, when the unthinkable occurred.
