Marcia Hughes, a 74-year-old Caucasian female, passed away unexpectedly in her West Warwick, Rhode Island home on June 15, 2021. Born on May 17, 1947, in Rutherford, New Jersey, Marcia was a graduate of Park Ridge High School and went on to have a long career as a registered nurse after graduating from Nursing School at Montclair University. Known for her gentle and loving care, her patients and their families often recognized her tireless efforts. Beyond her nursing career, Marcia also worked as an interior designer. She had a passion for being a gourmet cook and a music lover, often preparing meals for her family and friends while listening to classical music or her favorite musicals. She also enjoyed playing the flute, sewing decorative items for her loved ones, and creating handcrafted holiday decorations. A lover of the ocean, she enjoyed moonlit walks with her family.
On the evening of June 15, 2021, West Warwick police responded to a report of a shooting at a residence on River Farms Drive. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Marcia Hughes deceased from gunshot wounds. Her husband, Martin Hughes, who was also 74 at the time, was found at the scene with gunshot injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Following an investigation into the incident, authorities arrested Martin Hughes and charged him with the murder of his wife. He was arraigned at the hospital on charges of domestic first-degree murder and discharging a firearm in a compact area, and was ordered to be held without bail. In October 2021, a statewide grand jury indicted him on charges of domestic murder and using a firearm during a crime of violence resulting in death. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and continued to be held without bail.
