On March 4, 1955, Deputy Sheriff Edward "Red" Phillips, aged 38, was fatally shot while attempting to apprehend a murder suspect in the Green River rail yards. Earlier that day, the suspect had killed an auto dealer and wounded a town marshal in Frontier, Wyoming. Deputy Phillips, along with nine other law enforcement officers, was conducting a search in the railroad yards when he encountered a man on the platform.
