The incident unfolded on June 15, 1987, when Officer David Ronk, a 15-year veteran of the Honolulu Police Department, responded to a call regarding a domestic disturbance in Maili. He was tasked with serving a temporary restraining order on a 19-year-old male resident. Upon arrival at the residence, Officer Ronk encountered the suspect's mother, who claimed her son was not home. However, with permission to search the premises, Officer Ronk discovered the young man hiding in a bedroom closet.
