On September 5, 1908, in Haleyville, Alabama, City Marshal Bentley MacFarland Burnett, aged 60, was fatally shot while escorting a prisoner to jail. During the escort, a man approached Marshal Burnett from behind and demanded the release of the prisoner. Upon Burnett's refusal, the man shot him in the head, resulting in his immediate death.
