On September 10, 1916, Chief of Police Ike D. Chancey of the Hartford Police Department in Alabama was fatally shot. The assailant was the brother of a man whom Chief Chancey had shot and killed eight months earlier during an arrest attempt. This incident stemmed from a longstanding feud between Chief Chancey and the two brothers. The suspect, who claimed self-defense, was apprehended following the shooting.
