On July 20, 1929, Deputy Sheriff D.E. Tidwell, aged 39, of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office in Alabama, was fatally wounded in a confrontation on Jackson Highway. While on patrol with another deputy, the officers were flagged down by three men who had run out of gas. Upon realizing the men were law enforcement, one of the individuals attempted to dispose of liquor, prompting the other two to open fire.
