On July 20, 1929, Deputy Sheriff D.E. Tidwell, aged 39, of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office in Alabama, was fatally wounded in a confrontation on Jackson Highway. While on patrol with another deputy, the officers were flagged down by three men who had run out of gas.
