In the summer of 1957, the life of J.C. Woodham, a 48-year-old White male, was tragically cut short in Geneva, Alabama. On August 5th of that year, Woodham, who served as the local sheriff, confronted two individuals who were suspected of stealing narcotics from a nearby hospital. During this encounter, the suspects opened fire, gravely wounding Sheriff Woodham. He battled his injuries for two days before succumbing to them on August 7, 1957.
The day following the shooting, two suspects were apprehended in Pensacola, Florida. Their capture marked the beginning of a swift legal process. By November 1957, both men faced trial and were ultimately convicted of first-degree murder for their roles in the death of Sheriff Woodham. The court handed down severe sentences to the convicted men. One received a life sentence in prison, while the other was condemned to death. Later, the death sentence for the second individual was commuted to a life term. Both men would go on to spend the remainder of their lives incarcerated, dying in prison. Sheriff Woodham was survived by his two teenage children.
