On March 9, 1980, Deputy Sheriff Arlyn Gae Lockley of the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office in Alabama tragically lost his life at the age of 26 due to an accidental firearm discharge while on duty. Having served the department for just over five months, his untimely death was a significant loss to the law enforcement community.
