On July 5, 2017, 89-year-old Joe Montgomery was found deceased in his Ashville, Alabama home. A family member discovered his body on the floor, prompting an investigation by the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities arrested Montgomery's grandson, 30-year-old Claude Henry Williams Jr., in connection with the shooting. Williams was charged with first-degree murder and was indicted by a St. Clair County grand jury in December 2017.
