Patrol Officer John Ward Dotson, aged 26, was tragically killed in the line of duty on April 8, 1980, in Saraland, Alabama. While issuing a speeding citation on Highway 43, he was fatally shot by the offender. His body was discovered beside his patrol car, with the suspect's ticket still clutched in his hand.
