On September 4, 1989, 27-year-old Janet Lockett was fatally shot in Elba, Alabama, by her common-law husband, Randy Walton. Earlier that day, Walton and Lockett had a domestic dispute. Officer Michael Patrick of the Elba Police Department transported Walton to Lockett's parents' home, allowing him to sit in the front seat of the patrol car. Upon arrival, Walton assaulted Officer Patrick, seized his revolver, and entered the home, where he shot and killed Lockett before taking his own life.
