On a tragic morning in Bentley, Alabama, the lives of the Barber family were irrevocably shattered. On February 15, 1992, Freddie Barber, a 50-year-old male, was gunned down in his own home. The architect of this senseless violence was Jason Oric Williams, who, after a night of consuming alcohol and a cocktail of illegal drugs, embarked on a brutal rampage.
The horrific events began to unfold at the nearby trailer of Gerald Paravicini, where Williams had been temporarily residing. Following a contentious phone call with his estranged wife, Williams armed himself with a. 22-caliber rifle and shot Paravicini. He then turned his aggression on Paravicini's wife and her 16-year-old son, beating the woman and shooting the teenager in the face. Leaving a scene of carnage behind him, Williams then proceeded approximately 200 yards to the home of his neighbors, the Barber family.
Upon entering the Barber residence, Williams first encountered Linda Barber, who was preparing for her shift at the U.S. Postal Service, and shot her. He then moved to the kitchen, where he fatally shot Freddie Barber as he was drinking his morning coffee. The rampage continued as Williams entered a bedroom and shot the couple's 22-year-old son, Bryan, as he lay sleeping. Another son, Brad, who was 16 at the time, managed to escape after a struggle with Williams, sustaining a gunshot wound to his hand. Before fleeing the scene in the Barber's van with stolen cash and credit cards, Williams's violent spree had claimed the lives of Freddie, Linda, and Bryan Barber, as well as Gerald Paravicini.
Law enforcement apprehended Williams in Mississippi, where he claimed to have no memory of the shootings and to have discarded the murder weapon over a bridge. Despite his claims, he was charged with multiple counts of capital murder and attempted murder. At trial, Williams pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of a mental disease or defect, asserting that a combination of a preexisting borderline personality disorder and his ingestion of drugs and alcohol had rendered him unable to appreciate the wrongfulness of his actions. The jury, however, rejected this defense and found him guilty on all counts. By a vote of 10-2, they recommended a sentence of death for the capital murder convictions.
Following the jury's recommendation, the trial judge imposed the death penalty for the murders and a 20-year prison sentence for the attempted murder conviction. After years of appeals that were ultimately unsuccessful, Jason Oric Williams was executed by lethal injection on May 19, 2011. Before his execution, Williams expressed a final sentiment, stating, 'I hope that the families of the victims forgive me for what I've done.' For the surviving family members of Freddie Barber, his wife Linda, and his son Bryan, the execution marked the end of a long and painful chapter, with one of Freddie's brothers stating that their family had 'received its long coming justice.'
