On July 31, 1999, 17-year-old J.B. Hilton Green Beasley and her friend, Tracie Hawlett, also 17, left their homes in Dothan, Alabama, to attend a party celebrating Beasley's birthday. The two high school students became lost and ended up in Ozark, Alabama. Hawlett called her mother from a payphone at a convenience store, informing her that they were lost but had received directions and were heading home.
