Agila Lee Flennory, a 40-year-old Black man, was killed by gunfire on July 7, 2014, at his home in Center Point, Alabama, in the 900 block of 21st Avenue Northwest. The shooting unfolded just after daybreak, around 6:30 that morning, when deputies were called to the house on a report that someone had been shot. According to the account published after the arrest, the violence began when a neighbor came to the back door of the home asking to speak with Flennory. The neighbor was identified as 23-year-old Alfred Douglas Davis of Center Point. After being told Flennory was asleep, Davis allegedly insisted that he be awakened because it was an emergency. Flennory got up and went into the backyard with his 18-year-old nephew to meet him. Investigators said Davis then allegedly shot Flennory, dropping him to the ground, and when the nephew ran, he was shot in the leg. The younger man survived, was treated at the hospital, and released, leaving the scene as both a crime scene and the setting of a family tragedy that widened in a matter of moments.
Authorities said Davis was taken into custody at his residence immediately after the shooting. He was formally charged with murder in Flennory’s death and attempted murder in the wounding of the nephew, and he was booked into the Jefferson County Jail with bond set at $135,000.
