In the summer of 2015, a domestic dispute in Brent, Alabama, escalated to a fatal conclusion, leaving a family shattered and a community in mourning. On the evening of July 22nd, 45-year-old Catherine Leverette, a female resident of the small town, was shot at her home on Dogwood Drive. The incident also left her son, Randy Leverette Jr., with injuries. Both mother and son were quickly transported to area hospitals for medical attention.
Catherine was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, while her son was admitted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
At the scene of the violent encounter, law enforcement officers took Randy Leverette Sr., Catherine's husband, into custody. He was subsequently charged with two counts of attempted murder for the shootings of his wife and son and was booked into the Bibb County Jail. Initially, the injuries sustained by Catherine and her son were not believed to be life-threatening. However, Catherine's condition took a turn for the worse, and after fighting for her life for nine days, she succumbed to her injuries on July 31, 2015.
Following Catherine Leverette's death, the charges against her husband were upgraded. Randy Leverette Sr. then faced a charge of murder in connection with his wife's death, in addition to the initial charge of attempted murder for the shooting of his son. The tragic event sent ripples through the Brent community, highlighting the devastating consequences of domestic violence. While Randy Leverette Jr. was eventually released from the hospital, the family was irrevocably broken by the loss of Catherine.
