In the late summer of 2015, a violent encounter in Birmingham, Alabama, set in motion a chain of events that would ultimately claim the life of Andre Feliciano Waters. A 45-year-old Black man, Waters was at the Kingston Grocery on the 800 block of 44th Place North on the afternoon of August 27th. It was there that he was shot twice in the stomach, a brutal act that would begin a nearly two-month battle for his life.
Initially, the injuries Waters sustained were not believed to be
life-threatening. He was rushed to UAB's Trauma and Burn Intensive Care Unit, where medical staff worked to stabilize him. For weeks, he remained in the hospital, fighting to recover from the grievous wounds he had received. However, despite the efforts of his doctors and his own will to survive, his condition took a turn for the worse. On October 18, 2015, nearly two months after the shooting, Andre Feliciano Waters succumbed to his injuries.
With his death, the investigation by the Birmingham Police Department was reclassified as a homicide. Detectives began the arduous task of piecing together the circumstances that led to the shooting outside the neighborhood grocery store. They sought information from the community, hoping for leads that would point them to the individual or individuals responsible for this senseless act of violence.
Despite their efforts, the case has remained unsolved. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the death of Andre Feliciano Waters, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation into his murder is ongoing, a cold case that leaves a family without answers and a community with the lingering question of who was responsible for the death of a man whose life was cut short by a violent afternoon in late August.
