On a tragic day in August 2016, the life of 35-year-old Shannon Melissia Randall was violently cut short in Citronelle, Alabama. She, along with her husband Joseph Adam Turner, her brother Robert Lee Brown, and two others, Chelsea Marie Reed and Justin Kaleb Reed, fell victim to a brutal attack in their home. The horrific event unfolded in the early morning hours of August 20, 2016.
The perpetrator was identified as Derrick Ryan Dearman.
His rampage was fueled by a methamphetamine-induced rage after his estranged girlfriend, Laneta Lester, had sought refuge at the residence to escape his abuse. Earlier in the night, police had been called to the property due to a trespassing complaint against Dearman, but he was not found at that time. He later returned, breaking into the home and attacking the occupants while they slept, using both a firearm and an axe.
Following the murders, Dearman abducted Lester and an infant from the home and fled to Mississippi. He later released them and surrendered to the Greene County Sheriff's Office, where he confessed to the murders.
Dearman was charged with multiple counts of capital murder. In August 2018, he pleaded guilty to ten counts of capital murder and, against his attorneys' advice, requested the death penalty. A jury unanimously recommended his execution, and in October 2018, the court sentenced him to death. After waiving further appeals, Derrick Ryan Dearman was executed by lethal injection on October 17, 2024, bringing a close to the legal chapter of this devastating case.
