In the quiet town of Moundville, Alabama, a tragedy unfolded that cut short the life of 14-year-old Kaci Rae Mitchell. On January 26, 2017, Kaci, a female, was found deceased in her home, the victim of a violent act that also claimed the life of her mother, 37-year-old Paige Mitchell. Kaci was a student at Hale County Middle School, where she was a member of the Honors Club.
She was also actively involved in the youth group at Moundville Baptist Church.
The discovery of their bodies led law enforcement to a person of interest, Brad Gray. When authorities went to Gray's residence to question him, he shot himself. He was transported to a hospital and remained in critical condition until he died on Sunday, January 29, 2017. Further investigation revealed a troubled history between Gray and Paige Mitchell. In 2015, Mitchell had accused Gray of threatening to kill her, which resulted in a conviction for Gray, though he received a suspended sentence.
The community mourned the loss of Kaci and her mother. Funeral services were held on January 29, 2017, at Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South. In memory of Kaci and Paige, the family suggested that donations be made to domestic violence services. Kaci was preceded in death by her father, Benjamin Mitchell. She is survived by her sister, Kayla R. Mitchell, and her grandparents.
