In the early moments of a Wednesday morning, just after midnight on June 3, 2009, the life of Byron Frederick Bastian was tragically cut short. The 33-year-old African-American man was in the 5400 block of C Street, Southeast in Washington, D.C., when gunfire erupted. Responding to the reports, officers from the Metropolitan Police Department arrived at a grim scene, finding Bastian suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries at the location.
