On March 7, 2018, in Hurtsboro, Alabama, 69-year-old Donald "Donnie" Hughes, the longtime owner of the City Grill Café, was fatally shot in his establishment. Around 6:30 a.m., as patrons were having breakfast, 64-year-old Walter Frank Thomas entered the café armed with a .22 caliber rifle.
