On a tragic Sunday, October 10, 2021, the life of a young Black/African American man, 24-year-old Aaron Gibbs, was cut short in Hurtsboro, Alabama. The fatal incident unfolded at an apartment complex on Lloyd Street, where Gibbs was discovered with a single, fatal gunshot wound. The small community was left to mourn the untimely loss of one of its own.
Witnesses at the scene quickly identified a suspect, 22-year-old Tracy Cloud Jr., who was reportedly the ex-boyfriend of a woman residing
at the apartment complex. The narrative of that night took a strange turn when Cloud himself arrived at East Alabama Medical Center. He was suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and claimed that after leaving the apartments on his motorcycle, he had been chased and shot at by people in a car.
Despite his claims, authorities arrested Cloud following his medical treatment and charged him with the murder of Aaron Gibbs. The Russell County Sheriff's Office continued to delve into the complexities of the case, seeking to understand the full scope of events that led to the deadly confrontation, including an investigation into Cloud's assertion that he was pursued.
In the days that followed, family and friends gathered to remember Aaron, also known as "PEE WEE". His funeral service was held on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Hurtsboro, a testament to a life taken too soon. The community grieved as they sought answers and awaited justice for a young man whose life had been violently extinguished.
