On January 27, 1981, Chief of Police George L. Claypool of the Hurtsboro Police Department in Alabama responded to a report of a suspicious individual at a local residence. Upon arrival, Chief Claypool encountered George Daniel, who had been seeking shelter at the home. When Chief Claypool attempted to escort Daniel to his patrol car, a physical altercation ensued. During the struggle, Daniel managed to seize Chief Claypool's service weapon and fatally shot him.
