On a quiet, rural dirt road in Hurtsboro, Alabama, the life of 63-year-old Randolph 'Randy' Allen Cannon came to a tragic and unexpected end on December 30, 2019. A white male, Cannon was a man known for his kindness to animals, his loyalty to friends and neighbors, and his helpful nature at his job at Lowe's. On that fateful morning, he was out walking his dog along Shady Grove Lane, near property he owned, a routine that would turn deadly.
When he didn't return home, his wife went to look for him and made the devastating discovery of his body by the roadside; his loyal dog had remained by his side.
Investigators initially had very little to go on, as the crime occurred on a secluded road with no witnesses. The Russell County Sheriff's Office began what they described as a homicide investigation, noting that Cannon had died from multiple gunshot wounds. A crucial break in the case came after a $5,000 reward was offered, which led to tips that pointed authorities in the right direction. Their investigation worked tirelessly for six days, through New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, to piece together the events that led to the senseless killing.
The investigation led to the arrest of 20-year-old Deontra Jones. According to the Russell County Sheriff, Jones confessed to the murder. On the morning of the shooting, Jones and a female companion were parked on the road when Cannon approached their vehicle. He questioned them about being on his property and trespassing. This confrontation escalated tragically when Jones got out of the car, started shooting at Cannon, and chased him down the road, ultimately shooting him multiple times. The female who was with Jones described the events to investigators and has not been charged, as authorities believe she was not involved in the shooting itself. Jones faced a murder charge, with the possibility of it being upgraded to capital murder pending a decision from the district attorney's office.
