On a summer day in Adger, Alabama, a dispute between two men riding on dirt roads turned deadly, leaving a 29-year-old man, Andrew Jonathan Carroll, shot to death. The incident, which occurred on July 22, 2018, concluded with the arrest of Scott Allen Pennington, a 36-year-old from the same area.
The events unfolded along an access road to a gas well in the 4100 block of Valley Ford Road. It was there that an argument erupted between Carroll and Pennington.
Shortly after 10:30 that morning, Pennington himself contacted the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, reporting that he had shot and killed Carroll during the altercation.
When deputies arrived, they found Pennington at the intersection of Valley Ford Road and Johns Road. He then led them to the location where he had left Carroll's body. Initially, Pennington claimed that he had acted in self-defense during the argument. However, as detectives from the Sheriff's Office delved into the case, they uncovered evidence that contradicted his account of the events.
Based on the evidence that did not support the claim of self-defense, Scott Allen Pennington was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the murder of Jonathan Carroll. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail with a bond set at $75,000. The family of Andrew Jonathan Carroll was left to mourn the loss of a young man whose life was cut short by an act of gun violence.
