On December 6, 2023, 61-year-old Jeff Richard Herbinger was found deceased in his home in Adger, Alabama, from an apparent gunshot wound. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office initiated a homicide investigation, revealing that Herbinger had been killed between December 4 and December 6. On December 13, authorities arrested 61-year-old Shane Levi Ashby in connection with the murder. Ashby was charged with capital murder and held without bond.
