Friends and family remembered Cedric Hubbard as a kind-hearted, loving, and funny man known as "The Gentle Giant." The 45-year-old Black man was described as the life of the party and an amazing father whose son was his best friend. A graduate of Sidney Lanier High School in his hometown of Montgomery, Alabama, he worked at Mobis and was a beloved brother, cousin, and friend to many.
On May 12, 2019, an argument broke out on the 700 block of Capri Street in Montgomery between Mr.
Hubbard and a man he knew, 26-year-old Kendal Johnson. The verbal altercation escalated, and Mr. Hubbard was shot. He suffered a life-threatening gunshot wound and was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. He fought for his life for more than three weeks.
On June 5, 2019, Cedric Hubbard succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Following his death, the Montgomery Police Department continued its investigation into the shooting.
Less than a week later, on June 11, 2019, authorities arrested Kendal Johnson and charged him with murder for Mr. Hubbard's death. Johnson was transported to the Montgomery County Detention Facility, where he was held under a $150,000 bond. As of January 2020, the case against Johnson was proceeding through the court system.
