In the late hours of a Tuesday night in February 2020, a seemingly routine traffic stop would tragically escalate, leading to the death of a dedicated police officer. Nicholas Daniel O'Rear, a 33-year-old White/Caucasian male, was a K-9 officer with the Kimberly Police Department in Alabama. On the evening of February 4th, an officer from the neighboring Warrior Police Department attempted to pull over a vehicle with an expired tag. The driver, however, refused to comply, initiating a vehicle pursuit that would draw in assistance from other local law enforcement, including Officer O'Rear.
As the chase progressed onto Interstate 65 South, near Old U.S. Highway 31, the suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Preston Johnson, opened fire on the pursuing officers. A bullet from Johnson's rifle struck Officer O'Rear in the head, causing his patrol car to crash. Despite being rushed to UAB Hospital, Nicholas Daniel O'Rear succumbed to his injuries in the early morning hours of February 5, 2020. He was a man known for his dedication to public service, having also been a firefighter, an EMT, and an ordained minister. He left behind two children and a third on the way.
The manhunt for Preston Johnson was swift, and he was taken into custody within hours of the shooting. Authorities discovered he was armed with a rifle and a pistol at the time of the incident and had a lengthy criminal history. Initially charged with capital murder, Johnson ultimately pleaded guilty to intentional murder in 2022, a plea that allowed him to avoid the death penalty. The death of Officer O'Rear marked the first time a Kimberly police officer was killed in the line of duty, a somber milestone for the small community and a heartbreaking loss for his family, friends, and fellow officers who remembered him for his kindness and his ever-present sense of humor.
