On February 4, 2020, in Mobile, Alabama, 35-year-old Patrick Edwards was fatally shot following a road rage incident. The confrontation began when Edwards' vehicle was involved in a minor collision with another car driven by Trenton Thornton, a 31-year-old Marine veteran. Instead of stopping, Thornton fled the scene, prompting Edwards and his common-law wife to pursue him in an attempt to obtain his license plate number.
